Spin Digital has partnered with Intel Corporation to announce the launch of a new live 8K VVC/H.266 encoder at the IBC 2023 trade show in Amsterdam. The event will feature an onsite demonstration of live 8K 60-fps 10-bit HDR VVC encoding, streaming, and playback from September 15 to 18.
The Spin Digital encoder, known as Spin Enc Live, is a CPU-based encoder that incorporates advanced video compression algorithms for VVC live encoding. It is optimized for the latest 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors architectures. The VVC codec offers improved quality and reduced bitrate compared to HEVC, making it ideal for 8K live applications in internet streaming, broadcasting, and immersive VR experiences.
The encoder has been specifically optimized for 8K 60-fps real-time encoding, leveraging the scalability and multithreading capabilities of the 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors. It uses Intel AVX-512 instructions and Intel DL Boost Vector Neural Network Instructions (VNNI) to deliver high-quality output at a low bitrate.
According to Dr. Mauricio Alvarez Mesa, CEO of Spin Digital, the collaboration with Intel opens up new possibilities for 8K broadcasting, high frame rate (HFR) live streaming, and live VR in 3D stereoscopic format.
During the demonstration, an end-to-end 8K 60-fps VVC live streaming workflow will be showcased. The Spin Enc Live encoder runs on a server with 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors, while the playback is performed using Spin Digital Media Player (Spin Player) on a compact PC with an Intel Core i9-13900K CPU. Intel will also showcase stunning 8Kp60 10-bit HDR content courtesy of NHK.
The technical paper accompanying the demonstration, titled “A Real-time 8K-60-FPS-HDR VVC/H.266 Software Encoder for Next-generation Live Applications,” discusses the compression, quality, and performance of the real-time 8K VVC software encoder using 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors architecture.
This collaboration between Spin Digital and Intel Corporation is expected to drive the wider adoption of 8K live streaming applications. Those interested in learning more about 8K VVC live encoding, streaming, and playback technologies can arrange a meeting with the CEO of Spin Digital and the Director of Global Content Technology from Intel Corporation at IBC 2023.
