Netflix has announced that they will be adapting Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel, The Twits, into an animated feature film, set to be released in 2025. The book, published in 1980, was written Dahl and illustrated Quentin Blake. The movie will be helmed Phil Johnston, known for his work on films such as Ralph Breaks the Internet and Zootopia.
The Twits follows the story of Mr. and Mrs. Twit, the meanest and smelliest people in the world, who also happen to own the most disgusting and dangerous amusement park, called Twitlandia. When the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals must use their trickery to save the city from the Twits’ cruelty. It promises to be a hysterically funny film, filled with the Twits’ well-known tricks, such as the Wormy Spaghetti and the Dreaded Shrinks.
Phil Johnston expressed his excitement for the project, stating that The Twits was his favorite book when he was a child. He admires the terrible antics of the Twits, as they lack self-awareness, personal hygiene, and human decency. The film serves as a reminder that characters like the Twits, who embrace anger and vengeance, should not be allowed to prevail in our world.
Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company in September 2021, solidifying their commitment to bringing Dahl’s stories to life through various mediums. They have previously released Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical in 2022 and will be releasing Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, along with other Anderson short films based on Dahl’s work, in September 2023. Additionally, a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory animated series is currently in development.
The Twits is set to arrive on Netflix in 2025, providing audiences with a delightful and amusing adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic tale of mischief and redemption.
