Woman Files Complaint Against Husband for Triple Talaq Over WhatsApp

News WhatsApp

A woman from Dakshina Kannada district has lodged a complaint at the Sullia police station against her husband, Abdul Rasheed, for allegedly giving her triple talaq over WhatsApp. The couple has two daughters and Abdul is employed overseas. The woman hails from Jayanagar in Sullia taluk in Dakshina Kannada district.

Abdul had taken his wife abroad two years ago but left her in Sullia during her second delivery. According to the police, the couple had some discord recently but managed to resolve the issues with the help of elders. However, Abdul has now sought a divorce through triple talaq over WhatsApp.

The Sullia police are currently investigating the case. Triple talaq is a controversial practice in Muslim personal law where a husband can unilaterally divorce his wife saying or writing “talaq” three times in one sitting. This practice has been a subject of debate and has been outlawed in several countries, including India.

In recent years, WhatsApp has become a common platform for communication, including for delivering divorce messages. This case highlights the need for legal and social reforms to address issues related to triple talaq and its use in the digital age.
