Indian athletes are set to compete in the Asian Games 2023, which will be held in Hangzhou, China. The games will feature a total of 39 different sports, with events taking place from September 23 to October 8.

Originally scheduled for September 2022, the 19th edition of the Asian Games was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The games will now host 481 events across 40 sports, with 45 countries participating.

India’s talented athletes will be vying for medals in various disciplines. Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Asian Games, world, and Olympic champion in men’s javelin throw, will be leading India’s 655-member squad. The athletics contingent, consisting of 35 men and 33 women, is the largest for India in Hangzhou.

The Indian cricket team, both men’s and women’s, will also be making their debut in the Asian Games. Led Ruturaj Gaikwad and Harmanpreet Kaur respectively, they will be hoping to make a mark in the tournament.

Other notable Indian athletes participating in the Asian Games include weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, and wrestler Bajrang Punia. These Olympic medallists will be looking to add more accolades to their already impressive careers. In badminton, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and PV Sindhu will be representing India.

Noteworthy defending champions from India include Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the Asian record holder in shot put, as well as Swapna Barman in the heptathlon and Jinson Johnson in the men’s 1500m event.

The 19th Asian Games also provide an opportunity for athletes to secure Olympic quotas for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. A total of 74 quotas will be available in disciplines such as archery, artistic swimming, boxing, breaking, hockey, modern pentathlon, sailing, tennis, and water polo.
